Words

October 27th, 2008

We are so used to putting up with garbage, that we often mistake the brilliant for trash. We don’t read news articles, we scan them. Take the information we want, leaving the pointless sentences to the lame and boring.

I do believe that we should do what we think is ideal, even if everything around us is not. Make something in the world for others to learn right from, and to also appreciate. Even if it takes a lifetime, whatever we do, we do it for the future. I do believe that we should read word-for-word and that points should be made before their long descriptions. I try to write each and every word in it’s full meaning, for a reason. I do think that we should be using words by their actual meanings, to say what we want to say, not to use words for their traditions and “sayings”. (though that can also be useful sometimes)

For example, “curse words” are just that. Misused words, out of context, said as a curse. Curse words. You don’t even need to know what the word means, because you do not use the word to describe something. It’s an empty word, it can be any word. Any word that you use out of context, is a bad word. It doesn’t make you cool, just horrible at communicating. We try to say what we need to say, so watch your mouth.

We try, and sometimes we mess up. We say things that we know at that very moment. This means that in the next second, we could change our mind completely. Our opinion is who we say we are. If we are constantly changing, that means that you and I should never hold anything against each other. If we do, we pass final judgement on either that person or a subject. That is called judging others. Instead of making that foolish mistake, you could just take words as the words that they are. You’re free to think about it, as well as come to conclusions, but you don’t know exactly what that person has in mind. That person is trying to communicate, and you cannot read his mind. Therefor you are not in the position to Judge. The exact same thing goes to ”Swearing”. A swear is an oath, a pledge. You don’t know the future, therefor you do not make promises that you don’t know the outcome to. No matter how sure you are, you are not in the position. If you need to make a promise in order to validate that you are not lying, why would you be lying in the first place? You shouldn’t be lying.

Words are made up in order for us to communicate, that’s pretty important. Don’t ruin it for all of us.

People should just say what they mean.

However, can you not communicate without words? Or with misused words that are “agreed” on by the speaker and the listener?

The problem is that people say what they don’t mean to cover up what they do mean. In your example of swearing – what’s covered up is the anger. Why not just say you’re angry?

  2. Den Says:

But that’s why we have the dictionary. A book that defines what we agree on. It’s a standard. You’re always free to start your own dictionary.

Telling someone that you’re angry will not express your anger. (unless you can learn to?) Most of the time we think we are right to be angry and we think it’s right to express anger with words. Maybe taking a walk is a better alternative.

I find it hard to actualy take people for what they say. Did he mean it? Or did he just say it? Did he regret saying it? Does he really think so?

Let’s say my husband gives me a compliment “Your hair looks nice today” I say “Thank you” but think to myself – did my hair look that bad yesterday?

Maybe that’s negative thinking, but can you really take people for what they say? Sometimes it’s “I hate work” that I hear from my subordinates, yet they show up on time everyday. I see them smiling and laughing. Do they really “hate” work? Dislike it with a passion? I don’t think so.

But thinking of what people might mean and not taking words at face value will only drive me crazy. Say what you mean please. Otherwise I have no idea what you mean.
